Panel view plus 1000 user manual. You should be able to program your garage door remote after reading this!
I will be talking about Liftmaster and Craftsman garage door openers. The Chamberlain Corporation makes Craftsman, Chamberlain, and Sears Craftsman garage door openers. Whether you have a chain drive, a screw drive, or, a belt drive opener, they all program the same. There is a 'learn' button on the machine that holds the information from the remote control. The learn button may be located on the side of the opener but, most models have them on the rear of the machine. How you can locate the button easily is to find where all of the wires are running into the machine. The learn button is usually square, but, it can be round. The colors of the buttons can be white, yellow, green, red, or the new frequency is purple.
Look at the photo above and you can see the square (red) button located on the left side of the 'Logic board'. The logic board is the computer that tells the opener whatto do and when to do it. It is also usually the first thing that lightening will hit in a thunderstorm. I basically is a radio frequency receiver that picks up electrically transmitted signals. Lightening is an electrical signal, and a very powerful one. The little wire on the bottom right side of the logic board is the receivers antenna. DO NOT CUT IT OFF! I have have been to houses that the homeowners complained about the remote control only working when they get really close to the door. When you cut the wire you alter the frequency of the remote control, and have to replace the logic board. The logic board can cost anywhere from 85.00 up to 100.00 depending on your area. Oh, the prices i just quoted didn't include labor.
Now, for the programing part you have been waiting for. Hold down the square or round learn button that is on your opener for about 20 seconds. This clears any other remote controls that may have been in the machine. NOTE: If you loose your remote control, or, if you are going thru a divorce, you need the clear the opener so that unwanted people can no longer have access to your house. Another tip... when you go to have your car serviced make sure you keep your remote control with you!
The reason i say this, is not because i am saying car dealerships or repairmen are crooks, but, there are exceptions to every rule. When you go to get your vehicle repaired you give the people your name, address, and your remote control. I know of one problem where a customer dropped off her Mercedes to be worked on and the mechanic had her address, and took her remote control, and went to her house that night and stole her car. Just stick it into your pocket until you get your car back.
Ok, once cleared, you take each remote control, and go to the back of the opener where the learn button is. Hold the remote control button down, and push and release the learn button. You should hear a click, and the lights on the machine may come on for a split second. When this happens, the remote control is programmed. Continue this process until all remotes are programmed. Note: The opener will only hold five remote controls, or, four remote controls and one keyless entry.
I hope this helped. Keep checking my hubs, my next one will deal with programing your car remote control to the opener.

I have 2 remotes 139.53681B and the batteries died, I replaced the batteries and they're not reprogramming. I have a craftsman motor 41A5021-3H and it's still working. I have followed the rules on the motor and searched for the manual and followed the directions to the best of my abilities. The directions are greek to me so I don't know if I am doing right, can someone explain in the simplest and stupidest of terms? Which is the transmitter, and which is the receiver? Do i hold the opener button or just press it, because I've heard both answers. I am lost and confused please help ASAP.
I figured it out. To help others, this is what I did. The 315 receiver WILL accept the 371LM remote. Couldn't believe it!
First time doing it and now have second remote. I ordered the 371LM from a website and the guy told me to pop of receiver front panel. Press the only button in front on receiver, light comes on then press 371LM remote. It was that easy. My husband couldn't believe it when he came home in the car and was able to use older 315 remote too in opening garage door. Now we have 2 working remotes for and OLDER garage door opener.
I would like to add second remote to GDO Sears #139.655. The first remote is a Sears 315. There is a 3x 3 receiver plugged into outlet. I ordered a 371LM remote and the guy online said I should pop cover off receiver box ,press small button, red light will come on , then press button on remote. So I do not have to get up on a ladder and press red square button at the motor at all? On the outside of garage a key is needed to open garage door and I want to open door with second remote from inside house. Thanks for you help.
We have a Craftman's 315. We want to program two remotes. When one is programmed the other stops working. What can we do?
I have a dumb question. If car visor remotes can be programmed just by holding down the button and then pressing the button on the original remote control, why don't they make universal remotes that work this way? (or do they work that way but just don't tell you in the manual?)
hello i have a lift master the clicker is not working so i tried to reset it and still not working its not recognizing the lift master what is the next step thanks
I took a pic. But I don't know how to send it to u. But to answer your comment above. No red green or purple square button.
Went to the unit. Looked everywhere for the learn button. Nothing. Took off the rear panel to see if it's in the rear of the unit. Nothing but a giant circuit board and not one button on there to press or anything that says learn? Took ok the light cover and nothing. I'm lost
I have the old liftmaster 1055 model and it has a wireless keypad that is attached to the door. I remover the wireless key pad, cleaned it and replaced the battery. It looks brand new and it lights up. It has the numbers 1 thru nine and the number zero next to the enter button. So how in the world do I program this keypad to open and close the door? Please help
I want to program my remote to open the gate to our community. How is this done.
Hey Luck,
Not having much luck myself looking for information on an old Craftman 1/2 HP opener, model: HBW0777 and finding out how my remotes it will handle. I'm trying to implement 5 Clicker brand KLIK1u s and a remote keypad. Can ya point me in the right direction for info on that or persuade me outright of how many it can handle?
Thanks,
-Bob
Hello, I have a marantec system with a 2 button m3-2312 remote. The wall control always works, but Some days the remote works and some days it doesn't. Marantech troubleshooting says that if the led light doesn't light up when you push the remote button, that I should change the battery. The problem is that there are two buttons, a large and small. The led lights up when I press the small bottom button, but no led light up when I press the large button. Also, I tried to reprogram per the instructions, to no avail. Please help!
I have a very old Sears Craftsman garage door; the control panel on the wall has two buttons that you have to push at same time to either open or close. I checked the overheard and it is model 139.664300. it does not appear to have a learn button. how can I program two new remotes? I do not have the instructions. Please help. Thanks
Yes I can. The door open from the interior button only. It can open with one touch . I hear the click when I re-plug the machine. I don't hear it when I try to program the remote. I stood on a ladder pressing on holding the remote then pressing on the square button but didn't hear a click.
My garage door opener works only from the interior button. It stopped working from a remote control nor the cars. I don't see a clear button to reprogram the machine. It's Craftsman Model 139.53648SRT1
Serial # 45575c00277. Help me please. I'm tired of waking back and forth since my garage doesn't have an access to the house.
Thank you
Thanks for all of your help.
Having trouble with a chamberlain remote. The remote that I have will operate a second opener fine but I can't it to recognize my first opener. I do have a homelink opener in my car that works fine with the first opener. I tried clearing the codes and it didn't seem to help. Any suggestions?
We have a craftsman overhead opener with the red square button. Our keypad went bad so we purchased a new one. When we programmed the key pad we had to reset all of the codes so the cars remotes then would not work. How can we get all of them to work together. We tried resetting all the codes and programming the cars remotes first then we can't get the keypad to program. We also tried the other way around. Can always get one to program but not the second. PLEASE HELP SUPER FRUSTRATED!!
Hi. Thanks for the speedy reply. No, no learn button at all. After reading through the internet ..I have come to that conclusion. I believe I have a Fixed Code Setting. After removing the light cover on the front and the back of the motor unit on the ceiling, all I can see is the antenna, the 2 knobs for regulating the speed/force of the door, there is one small yellow push button with an L.E.D. beside it.....that's all.
It is a 1/2 HP Steelcraft Model 1160SC . Could maybe the code be under some panel I have to unscrew on the housing of the motor unit????
I know the unit works because I held that yellow button down while holding down the remote control in the other hand with the L.E.D. even lighting up.
Hi..it's so nice to see you helping so many people.
Can you help me. We have a 1993 Steelcraft Remote..someone has knocked change the pin settings in the remote (when all they should have done was just put in a new battery lol)I have looked everywhere on the ceiling mounted motor unit, and on the small manual controller (mounted on the wall)..and I cannot find the switch settings so I can change the remote back to what it should be. They won't look like the same switches in the remote I assume..are they written in code perhaps..I cannot find any switches on this unit..Can you help please????
is it possible to program an older 8 dip switch chamberlain remote to work with a newer genie screw drive garage door operator system?
Thx. Very helpful, but when I program one remote, the 2nd remote stops working! The cycle goes on no matter how many times I do it. What do I do? One of the /2 remotes don't work?
I have the Liftmaster 1265 security+ unit on my rental. Only 1 (of the original 2) remote works, I reset the unit and also can't program the renter's new Jeep to the working remote. Reading the many posts above implies the control board is bad, time for a new one.
But my question is the working remote previously would stop the garage door from opening/closing if I pressed the remote button again, now I have to wait for it to fully open/close before changing the direction.
Is this another symptom of a failing control board?
Yes, the hard-wired unit works normally to change direction.
Thanks
can i open the garage with a 971LM control in a garage with green light learn button?, is there someway?
we have no learn button. There is only a dipswitch in the receiver and not the motor.
hi I have an old craftsman 139664020. I just purchased a chamberlain klik1u and am having trouble programming it. Does this remote not work with this old garage door opener?
OK..in the light of day, I looked at the machine and see that there is a yellow learn button. I held it down for 20 secs and heard a click. I then pressed the button on the remote and held it down while I pushed and released the learn button. If I've done all that correctly then I am going to assume that the remotes don't work on my opener. As I said..they were freebies so it was a shot in the dark! Let me know if I've done anything incorrectly otherwise I guess I'll have to see if I can find a compatible remote for my opener. I don't see the model number on the opener but it is 1/2 HP and the model# on the back for the circuit board is 41A3493-1. Do you know if it's possible to still get compatible remotes for such an old model? I'm selling the house which is why I want to get at least one remote but don't want to invest in a new opener! thx again!
I have a old craftsman garage door opener (circa 1983). It works with the keypad that is screwed into the garage wall but I lost the remotes ages ago. Someone gave me 2 craftsman remotes from the same time period. I opened one of the remotes and it has the dip switches so I thought I just had to open the stationary keypad and match the remote switches to what was inside. Now..bear in mind I have NO idea of what I'm doing beyond that! I unscrewed the cover of the box on the wall (yes I disconnected the power) and I can see the circuit board but no dip switches. I don't want to break it so rather than do anything further I decided to google. Can you steer me in the right direction? Awesome thread here btw. thx!
The remote was for another garage door opener I don't think I will be able to get it to work, its an RCS 318T and the garage opener is an Overhead Door Legacy. I will have to just go purchase a new remote.
Hi, I have two Chamberlain Liftmaster Professionals. I have not used the remotes in a few years. I just replaced the batteries in each (3) remotes and cleared all old remotes. I followed the instructions to reprogram the remotes. When I press the buttons on the remotes , the program light next to the learn button blinks indicating it is receiving a signal (I think) but the door is not opening. They only open and close with the wall mounted switches. Any idea what is wrong?
Hi, i have 3 garage doors. My garage remotes and keypad (craftsman) stopped working out of the blue. I hit the learn button on the first two doors and somehow programmed all the remotes to open both doors at once. HOw do i get them to open each one separately (one remote for one door). all the remotes open two doors at once. It is very frustrating. i tried your advice about resetting and pressing the learn button and remote button but they continue to open and close both doors together. What can i do?
Good day..
I hav the liftmaster (chamberlain) professiona 41A5021-1H-315 and i cant use it anymore.
First it will just have clicking noise and u will see only 5 flashing lights, then the holder for the garage door hit the bolt that stopping it. Its so tight and i cant move it or do anything.
What im doing now is just manually lower garage door.
What do you think is the problem and how can i repair it?
Thanks and god bless..
Hi, First off thank you for this site, you are very kind. I have Overhead Door Legacy garage door opener and a remote that doesn't say what brand it is. I followed your instructions and held the button in on the remote, it only stayed lit for about 10 seconds while it was blinking I hit the learn button on the Legacy and it blinked for about 25 seconds but nothing. Any suggestions?
I cant get my Clicker keyless entry to work. I enter the passcose,, and I D AND IT ASK ME TO HIT THE Smart / Learn button which i just can't seem to find anywhere ..any ideas ???
Both my car garage opener and my hand held opener stopped working at the same time. I programmed them both before with ease and now after they both stopped working no matter what I do they are not working. What should I do?
I have a Merik Security Plus 511M-FS2 1/2hp garage door opener. I need to program a new remote but the problem is that there is no learn button. The only button on the back of the opener says 'Erase'. The remote that came with the opener is a '973-315MK'. I live in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and I bought the only remote available he which is a '950-315CB' Will this remote work? How to I program without a 'learn button' Thanks for your help. Neil
Programmed the keypad exactly the way you said. Perfecto! Bought a new opener for my car and it is working, too. Yay!
I also seem to have de-programmed the wall-mounted keypad that is on the outside of the garage, through all my punching of the learn button. I hope you have some ideas to help me..thanks so much!
I have an old Sears Craftsman 1/2 horse opener. It has a purple learn button, with a yellow light that comes on when you push the learn button. I have a gray craftsman 315 controller, with one black button. I tried to push the learn button for 20 seconds to clear, then push my black button and the learn button again. No click..and it doesn't work to control the door. Can you help me? Thanks!
I have a secure ode stanley garsge door opener and two sears/craftsman remotes which are 139.53778. Is there a way I could program those remotes to work with the garsge opener? Thank you!
Joe - should i return the 971LM and purchas another 81LM so they are both workning the freq? is there any smart learning remotes on the market that are universal to all modules? we are only renting the property and don't wish to spend to much in order to have two remotes, logic board sounds expensive. Hi Sweeps,
We have just moved into our new house and only recieved on remote for our lift master unit. After following the steps on the net I purchased the 971LM due to the fact that I had RED programming button on the unit, in saying that the original remote was a 81LM (according to the sticker on the back) I am now having difficulties programming both remotes, I can get them to work one at a time but not together, is this a frequency issue? should I have both remotes with the same model number? I think it was strange that the 81LM was able to work with the red programming button, where the remote should be for the green button.
Hey Sweeps. I've been going crazy trying to syn my wireless keypad to my opener. I can never get the learn light to blink. My keypad# is 139.18795 and my opener is a Craftsman 139.1847D. Any ideas?? Thx
I have tried all the tactics I could find all over online. I have 2 remotes one stopped working when I washed it. Also I have 2 brand new remotes. All are 64LM remotes. I can not get the new remotes to program at all. I did set the 9 dip switches. On my 2 existing remotes, I did get the washed one to program again. However no mater what procedure I try I can only get one remote to program to the door. I wiped the opener clean by pressing button for 6 seconds. All remotes were cleared. I then held transmitter, saw led in opener blinking, hit learn button for 1 second. That one works. When I add the second remote in the same way door open or door closed it will erase the first remote. So no mater what the only remote that works is the last one programed. I have 2 doors and it is the same on both. I am at the point of purchasing new units. These are a little older but I believe they are more current than the 1997 that everyone refers to.
Hey Joe is it possible to program old remotes to a newer opener? I tried to program without any success the weird thing is that after programming the old one, when i try to use it the light blinks as if its getting the signal but the door does not move..
